Empty Spaces #1: Venice Beach California
My father, Francisco Fregoso died tragically at the age of 81 as he was accidently hit by a car while walking across a busy intersection. This photography project was pursued on a subconscious level. After my father passed away, I found myself attracted to photographing spaces that felt lonely. I looked for playgrounds, benches, swing sets, outdoor seating areas and purposely excluded people.
Later in life I discovered and became self aware that the empty spaces photo project was a way to grieve the loss of my father. Grieving I believe is a highly personal, complex and unique experience. For me over time, the sadness faded and in my case, the camera and printing images of empty spaces in the darkroom served as an instrument to heal from the loss. If you are on a journey of grieving, I send you healing thoughts and hope one day you will find a sense of peace.
Note: All images have been vetted and critiqued by virtue of group discussions with my teacher, professional photographer Amy Blakemore and advanced students, many of whom are professional photographers that attend the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas. Photos are evaluated based on light and shadows, contrast, composition, patterns and shapes, texture, movement, print quality and expression. Please allow 3 to 5 days for darkroom processing.
